Defense lawyer: Karen Read searched for O'Keefe before body was found

Murder trial of Boston Police officer's girlfriend continues

Read is charged with second-degree murder in the death of John O'Keefe.

A defense lawyer told jurors in Karen Read's murder trial that Read made a search on her phone for Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe shortly after the women found O'Keefe's body.

Read is charged with second-degree murder in the death of O'Keefe, her Boston police officer boyfriend. Prosecutors allege that after a night out, Read struck O'Keefe with her SUV while dropping him off at his Canton home in March 2023.

Read's lawyer, William Fick, told jurors that Read searched for O'Keefe on her phone at 4:36 a.m. on March 26, 2023. Fick said this shows that Read was not trying to hide anything and that she was concerned about O'Keefe.

Prosecutors, however, said that Read's search for O'Keefe was part of a plan to cover up her crime. They said that Read knew she had killed O'Keefe and that she was trying to figure out what to do next.

The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks.
